We filed our patent application today (UK Patent 2504438.9), for our system that we developed during the Innovate UK project, which is pretty exciting! It turned into a system that influences object interaction. The player character nervous system and it's autonomous responses to in-game events, in turn affects the player's object interactions. This is particularly effective in a VR game- where the motion controllers are usually supposed to be 1:1 with the character's hands.
Meanwhile we've been testing these new mechanics for a while. So far we have Quest headsets and Indexes working for most people. Vive and BigScreen Beyond have something different going on, so we're designing a mini-game to allow the testers to analyse their own setup. But once a player is comfortably using the breath input, this system increases the feeling of connection with the player character.
For these tests we created a tunnel environment with simple-to-implement spiders and worms and other bugs. So that we could concentrate fully on the breathing mechanics. But it does fit in the world of the game- the bunker home environment is connected to tunnels, where the player can try and escape to the outside world...
